Many people want to install their cat flap in a wall. And why not?

There are several different varieties of wall cat flaps on the market.

You can get the basic 4 way locking type where you can manually select whether your cats can get in, go out, both, or none. This is the cheapest option but comes with familiar problems of stray cats getting inside too.

One step up from that is the wall cat flap that requires a magnetic collar. However magnetic collars are large and heavy and can pick up nails etc. when your cat is outside. Also any other cat with a magnetic collar will be able to get inside.

Infra red wall cat flaps are better because they will keep other cats out. Just make sure you avoid the type with flimsy plastic doors or those that can be pulled back from outside. Clever cats can learn to pull the door open towards them and get in to eat all that lovely food waiting inside!

The best kind of wall cat flap currently on the market is the Pet Porte microchip cat flap wall version. It works without a collar and detects your cats existing microchip implant. No other cat can get in and the door cannot be pulled open from outside due to the special design.

Wall cat flaps of any kind are more difficult to fit than standard door cat flaps but if you are good at DIY then they can be well worth the extra effort especially if you have no plans of moving home in the near future.
