Cat owners who are having problems with neighbours cats getting inside most often opt for an infrared cat flap.

Infrared cat flaps work with your cat wearing a special collar attachment. It works a bit like a TV remote control. The collar constantly emits a coded infrared signal. When your cat approaches the door and the collar is lined up with the sensor on the cat flap the door opens.

Infrared cat flaps are quite good. The only problem is that the collars tend to go missing a lot. Cats find a way to slip out of them whilst outside and hide them somewhere! That can get expensive when it comes to replacing them.

Also there is the risk, as with any cat collar, that your cats paws get stuck in the collar. That can get quite serious. For this reason many people are now avoiding using cat collars.

If you don’t mind your cat wearing a collar then by all means get an infrared cat flap. They are OK and they are less expensive than the latest microchip sensing cat flaps like Pet Porte. Just make sure you weigh up the cost of replacing the collars if they go missing as replacements are not cheap.
