There is not a battery version of the Pet Porte available for two main reasons:

1) Batteries could run out and your cat could get locked out.

2) With mains power (via 12 volt adaptor) the microchip cat flap can scan continuously so that your cat can always run inside.

We believe it is useful for your cats to be able to run quickly inside, and thankfully the Pet Porte is designed by a vet with a special sensor porch that passes over your cat’s microchip when your cat approaches the door automatically unlocking the door using an extra strong solenoid locking mechanism and not a cheap battery powered motor.

Because of the sensor porch scanning continuously the door will always unlock before your cat reaches it therefore your cat will always be able to get in really easily.

With mains power (via a safe low current mains adaptor) the microchip cat flap scans for your cat 20 times a second and as you can imagine the door unlocks lightening fast.

I will soon be making a demonstration video showing how fast it opens featuring my cat Biscuits.

With battery power scanning would be reduced to as little as once per second so your cat would not be able to belt inside at full speed if needed. Many cat owners do find that sacrifice in opening time unacceptable because their cats are being chased inside and bullied by neighbours cats.

Of course since writing this the new Pet Porte Smart Flap has become available that does have battery backup and can even run on batteries if you prefer. See http://www.microchipcatflaps.co.uk/smartflap.html for full details.
